Mallomars are a cozier version of the S’mores of Summer for the fall and winter months. Mallomars begin with a graham cracker cookie, which is then topped with a generous puff of marshmallow. The combination is then completely encased in a coating of dark chocolate.
Purportedly because Mallomars can only be transported and survive on store shelves in the cooler months, Nabisco only distributes them between October and March. 70% of all Mallomar sales are generated in the greater NYC metropolitan area. Apparently, they’re hard to find south of the Mason-Dixon line and this can lead to some opportunistic profiteering.
The seasonal delights were created by Nabisco in 1913 and first distributed by a grocer in West Hoboken, NJ. Because of its proximity to a Nabisco Biscuit Company factory in the early 20th Century, Hudson County, NJ was the first to get a taste of a lot of good stuff.
